He and his wife regularly purchased tickets at the Plaid Pantry, so when he remembered — a month later — he still had a ticket still in his wallet, he figured he would check to see if it was worth anything a month later.

“The clerk wasn’t sure what I’d won but he said, ‘It looks like you need to go to Salem,” Sargent told the lottery.

Sargent checked the numbers when he got home and discovered he had been carrying a Megabucks jackpot ticket worth $5.7 million from the Aug. 24 drawing.

“I put it in a baggie and hid behind an Incredible Hulk action figure,” Sargent said. “I figured it would be safe there.”

Sargent and his wife, Gabrielle, traveled to Salem, Oregon on Sept. 29 to claim their prize. They decided to split the jackpot with a 30-year annuity payment, meaning after taxes, they will each receive $64,600 a year for 30 years.

The Sargent’s aren’t the only winners though — the Plaid Pantry in North Portland will get a 1% retail selling bonus of $57,000 for the win, according to the Oregon Lottery. It’s a “turn of good fortune” for the store, after the building was nearly destroyed by a fire back in 2018.

“What might have been considered by some to be an ‘unlucky’ store, has now become our ‘luckiest’ store,” Jonathan Polonsky, CEO of Plaid Pantries Inc., said. “Congratulations to the winner from our over 700 Plaid employees.”
