VILNIUS Will Richardson Jersey , May 21 (Xinhua) -- Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas met his Lithuania counterpart and its president on Wednesday, discussing bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as energy and regional security issues.

"Estonia is one of the most important partners of Lithuania with whom we share a common goal -- the well-being of our people as well as secure and economically successful future of the Baltic States," Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite was quoted by her press office as saying.

"We will achieve this goal by strengthening cooperation in the sphere of security and defense and implementing projects of strategic importance to regional economic development, such as power and transport interconnections with western Europe," she added.

The first liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda would be put into operation this December, Grybauskaite told Roivas.

Lithuania's LNG carrier named "Independence" built in South Korea is on the way to Klaipeda and is expected to arrive by the end of 2014.

The railway project Rail Baltica, according to Grybauskaite, will bring greatest benefits if it connects all capitals of the three Baltic countries.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is located at the southeast of the country, while Riga and Tallinn of Latvia and Estonia are coastal cities. The location of Vilnius would require more investment in the Rail Baltica project if the city were to be connected.

Power and gas connections with Poland, which will bring an end to the energy isolation of the region, are in the interests of all Baltic countries, said Grybauskaite. The idea is to connect the region with western Europe energy networks.

The construction of a Lithuanian-Polish electricity power link, LitPol Link, was officially inaugurated on May 5 in Alytus, a Lithuanian region neighboring Poland.

Concerning security issues, one of the key tasks for NATO is to review its defense capabilities and improve responsiveness, said Grybauskaite.

Lithuania and Estonia will jointly seek to enhance NATO's presence in the region, with more military exercises and training, according to Grybauskaite's press office.

NATO launched a large-scale exercise, the "Steadfast Javelin 1" in Estonia on May 16, in order to test the allied forces' capability and maintain NATO's readiness and combat effectiveness, a NATO statement said.

Around 6,000 troops from Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Britain and the United States are participating in the exercise which will run until May 23.

"The present situation in the region demands the Baltic states to be very united and cooperative in their aims of overall strategic projects, concerning energy independence, national security and economic welfare," said Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius during a joint press conference with Roivas on Wednesday.

The two sides expect to sign a shareholder agreement on establishment of Rail Baltica joint venture, said Butkevicius.

Butkevicius said the connection of Vilnius with the main railway project will be included in the shareholder agreement. Vilnius' inclusion is not only important to the capital itself but also to other Baltic countries, according to Roivas.

"In accordance to the agreement on EU funding, the first stage of the project through Kaunas has to continue," said Roivas.

Kaunas is the second largest city of Lithuania to the west of Vilnius.

"However, it is beneficial for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to connect Vilnius to this railway track. We have agreed about this and it will be included in the agreement," Roivas added.

Concerning joining the euro zone, Roivas said Estonians had more confidence in the euro than before and the attitude of foreign investors had improved greatly. Lithuania will soon feel the advantage of the new currency, he added.

Roivas, a 34-year-old politician, is on his first visit to Lithuania after taking office as the prime minister of Estonia on March 26 this year.
